The Oakland Raiders and the L.A. Chargers face off in a week 17 AFC West showdown with major playoff implications on New Year’s Eve.
The Oakland Raiders will simply be trying to play spoiler here after guaranteeing a sub-.500 record for the 5th time in the last 6 years after dropping to 6-9 with a 19-10 loss to Philadelphia in their last outing. Derek Carr threw for 140 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions on 15 of 29 passing, while Marshawn Lynch led the team in rushing with 25 carries for 95 yards. Amari Cooper led the team with 3 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown, while Seth Roberts added 3 catches of his own in the loss. On defense, the Raiders combined for a pair of sacks, a forced fumble that they also recovered, and an interception, while holding the Eagles to just 216 yards of total offence and just under 26 minutes of possession in the loss.

The L.A. Chargers enter week 17 in a 3-way tie for the 2nd wild card spot, sitting at 8-7 following a 14-7 win over the Jets in their last outing. Oakland is 3-8-2 ATS in their last 13 games overall and 3-0-2 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 games overall. Los Angeles is 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 division matchups and 7-15 ATS in their last 22 games following a win while the over is 10-1 in their last 11 week 17 matchups. The underdog is 15-2 ATS in the last 17 meetings between these two teams.
I really thought the Chargers would take it to the Jets last week, and they came out flat and let the Jets hang around the entire game. Say what you want about the Raiders, but they’re still a decent football team that’s playing for pride and would love nothing more than to stick it to a division rival in the last week of the season. The Chargers know what’s on the line and will be just trying to not lose, and I think that will allow the Raiders to hang in tough throughout the game. Plus, add in the staggering 15-2 ATS record for the underdog in the last 17 meetings between these two teams, and the Raiders’ success in the Chargers’ backyard, and I think we have a battle brewing here. Give me the Raiders and the points in this one.
