The Atlanta Falcons begin their defense of the NFC crown as they take to the road to face off against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday.
The Falcons snuck into the postseason with a week 17 victory and have locked up the second wild card spot setting them up for a date on Saturday with the resurgent Los Angeles Rams who have been remarkable to watch this season and are a very dangerous team on both sides of the football. Atlanta has taken a bit of a hit this season after Kyle Shanahan bolted for San Francisco and as such the Falcons offense has looked pedestrian compared to the group that led to Matt Ryan winning the MVP award last season, and unless they can get a breakout effort from their pivot this could be a tough outing for them and a short lived NFC title defense. Atlanta does have a very athletic defense and they will need every ounce of it against a Rams side that is potent running the ball with Todd Gurley and passing the ball with Jared Goff which makes them a very tough out.

The Rams meanwhile have completely turned around their franchise and thanks to Sean McVay this is a very prolific Rams side that has taken the league by storm and they have the Lombardi Trophy in their sights as the third seed and NFC West division champions. Los Angeles took one on the chin last weekend to finish off the regular season but most of their significant pieces were inactive in a meaningless game for them and with a full week to prepare for the Falcons it’ll be exciting to see what the Rams can do against a Falcons side who has struggled at times this season but has been playing for their playoff lives for the last few weeks and will be coming in with a ton of confidence.
The Falcons are 0-4 ATS in their last four playoff road games and 2-7 ATS in their last nine playoff games while the Rams are 4-1 ATS in their last five following a loss and the favourite is 13-3 in their last 16 meetings. Atlanta is the playoff savvy team here but they are a much different team and I think the Rams just have the swagger this season and with Gurley good to go I think he makes the difference and gives the Rams a close cover.
