The New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers meet up in preseason Week 3 action as both teams look to fine tune some things before the regular season begins.
The Patriots have had to deal with a huge overhaul on their offensive line and things went from bad to worse last weekend as they lost rookie tackle Isaiah Wynn to a season ending Achilles tear and what the Pats will do next remains to be seen. New England, like most teams in the NFL it seems like these days, are a group that is not fond of the preseason and the injury to Wynn is a huge reason why and now with some question marks about their running game and who is going to fill the temporary void left by Julian Edelman the Patriots could have a tough time getting out of the gate. As for this game against the Panthers I don’t expect to see much if any of New England’s starters in this one as you can be sure that the coaching staff is infuriated with losing another key piece to injury and won’t want to run that risk again.
The Panthers meanwhile head into the season as a dark horse in the NFC as they have some solid pieces on both sides of the ball and many are expecting this to be the breakout season of former Stanford back Christian McCaffery. Carolina is at home in this spot and while it is preseason the Cats are 4-1 ATS in their last five games at home and they have covered five straight games against New England. The work load of McCaffery, Cam Newton, DJ Moore, and Devin Funchess might be limited offensively but Carolina has a bit of uncertainty in their depth as well and could use this game as a show case for some of their fringe position battles.
The Pats are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 road games and are 0-5 ATS in their last five against the Panthers while Carolina is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 overall and have hit the over in six of their last eight. New England won’t be taking many chances in this one after the injury bug bit them and while the Panthers likely have the same concerns I like this spot for them as the cover the modest line at home.
