The Line: Los Angeles Chargers -2.5 -- Over/Under: 44
Over at StubHub Center on Saturday, the New Orleans Saints and the Los Angeles Chargers will be meeting up in a nationally-televised NFL preseason game.
The Saints are coming off a 2017 during which they went 11-5 and snagged an NFC South Championship. In the Wild Card Game, New Orleans beat the Panthers but then lost in the Divisional Round 29-24 to the Vikings.
The Saints are 1-1 in the preseason so far, beating the Jaguars 24-20 and falling to the Cardinals 20-15. In that Cards game, Saints QB Taysom Hill led the passers with 68 yards but threw a pair of picks. The good news is that Hill led the team in rushing with three carries for 43 yards.
Over on the Chargers’ side, they’re fresh off a 2017 that saw them go 9-7 and finish second in the AFC West. Los Angeles missed out on the playoffs for the fourth straight year despite rebounding from an ugly 0-4 start.
LA is also 1-1 in the preseason right now, falling to Arizona 24-17 and taking out the Seahawks 24-14. In the Seattle matchup, Chargers QB Geno Smith had another good outing with a 6-of-8 line for 85 yards and a TD, while Philip Rivers saw some action for 62 yards.
The Saints are 4-1 ATS in their last five Saturday games and 14-5 ATS in their last 19 road games. New Orleans is also 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games on grass and the over is 4-1 in their last five games overall.
Meanwhile, the Chargers are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games and 6-2 ATS in their last eight games on grass. LA is also 2-8 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games and the under is 8-1 in their last nine Saturday games.
Saints fans will be on an intensive Drew Brees Watch ahead of this one, and I’d imagine he’ll get at least a few snaps to shake off some of the rust. New Orleans will probably err on the side of caution with him regardless, however. As for LA, Geno Smith is showing some good things so far this preseason, so you can expect another good chunk of time from him. I’m going to go with the Chargers here in what should be an interesting game.
