The New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers meet in week 5 NFL action from Bank of America Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The New York Giants will be looking to bounce back from a 1-3 start, including a 33-18 loss to New Orleans in their last outing. Eli Manning has thrown for 1,055 yards in completing 74.2% of his 151 pass attempts with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. Saquon Barkley leads the G-Men in rushing with 260 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns while Odell Beckham Jr. leads the Giants’ receiving corps with 31 catches for 331 yards. Defensively, B.J. Hill leads the Giants with 2 sacks while Landon Collins is New York’s leading tackler with 21 tackles this season. As a team, New York is averaging 314.2 yards of total offense and 18.2 points per game through the first four weeks of the season.
The Carolina Panthers come into this game off of their bye week, currently sitting at 2-1 following a 31-21 win over Cincinnati in their last outing. Cam Newton has thrown for 646 yards with 5 touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 3 more scores. Christian McCaffrey leads the Panthers in rushing with 271 yards on the ground, while also leading the Panthers with 22 receptions out of the backfield. Devin Funchess leads Carolina’s receiving corps with 185 receiving yards this season. Defensively, Mario Addison leads Carolina with 2.5 sacks while Luke Kuechly leads the Panthers with 22 tackles on the year. As a team, Carolina is averaging 369.7 yards of total offense, including the most rushing yards per game in the league with 166 per contest to go along with 23.7 points per game.
New York is 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games against the NFC and 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 week 5 matchups while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. Carolina is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall while the over is 8-3 in their last 11 games following a win. The over is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
I had high hopes for the Giants this season, as you would think the addition of Barkley and signing OBJ to an extension would help ease matters. However, the Giants can’t keep points off of the board and now run into a Panthers squad that is strong offensively and plays well at home. I simply can’t trust the Giants until I see signs of life from Big Blue, so I’ll lay the touchdown with Carolina as more of a fade from the Giants, who simply aren’t a team worth backing right now.
