Handicapping NFL Defensive Player of the Year
2020 NFL Season
As we continue to do our homework behind the scenes and lock in betting options for when sports return, we turn our attention to the NFL Defensive Player of the Year betting odds. Aaron Donald opens up as the betting favorite for this award at +750 odds and everybody else is +1100 odds or better, so there’s certainly money to be made with these props.
Here are five players I’m looking at betting on for the 2020 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Aaron Donald, +750 - Aaron Donald may be the betting favorite, but he’s still giving you a chance to make 7.5 times your money, which is enough of a return for me to put something down. In his last three seasons, Donald is averaging 15.3 games, 3.7 forced fumbles, 14.7 sacks, 20 tackles for loss and 34 solo tackles. Donald has won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in two of the last three seasons. Donald is the best defensive player in the league and is still in his prime as he approaches 29 years old. I have to play Donald to win this award again.
Joey Bosa, +2500 - Joey Bosa is the star of a Los Angeles Chargers defense that’s not all that bad, and he’s somebody who has put himself in the conversation as one of the top defenders in the entire league. In four seasons and 49 starts, Bosa has racked up 40 sacks, double-digit sacks in three of those seasons. Bosa is also approaching just 25 years old, so it’s fair to say we have yet to see the best from the defensive end.
Shaquil Barrett, +4200 - Shaquil Barrett had a combined 14 sacks in his first five seasons, so it’s fair to see why he’s being overlooked with these odds even if he had 19.5 sacks last season. Maybe it was a fluke? Still, Barrett led the league last season with 19.5 sacks and is part of a front seven that includes Ndamukong Suh, Jason Pierre-Paul and Devin White. Newsflash, Barrett is going to be able to roam free and have chances to get to the quarterback for a second straight season. This is one of the better value bets you’re going to find on this whole board.
Minkah Fitzpatrick, +2900 - Most knew that Minkah Fitzpatrick was a rising star in the league and he’s coming off a 14-game stretch with the Pittsburgh Steelers that gives you a glimpse of his potential. Since coming over from the Miami Dolphins, Fitzpatrick came away with five interceptions, nine pass deflections, one forced fumble and three total touchdowns. In a three-game stretch, Fitzpatrick had four interceptions, five pass deflections and three touchdowns. If that’s a sign of things to come… Yikes.
Cameron Jordan, +5000 - If you’re like me and love long shots with your future bets, Cameron Jordan and a chance to make 50 times your money is worth a look. Jordan isn’t getting any younger as he approaches 31 years old, but we’re talking about a pass rusher who has topped double-digit sacks in four of his last five seasons and has 40.5 sacks in his last 48 games. Jordan is also coming off his best season yet with 15.5 sacks and 25 quarterback hits, so maybe he really is capable of reaching another level. Jordan doesn’t get the same respect as some of the other defenders in this league, but there’s no denying his production and eventually he has to be taken seriously in these award conversations.
