Handicapping NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
2020 NFL Season
Now with the 2020 NFL draft in the books, we can turn our attention to Offensive Rookie of the Year odds and another chance to pad our bankroll. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow opens up as the betting favorite with +250 odds and we’re going to ignore that price. Burrow is fighting with the more experienced and more expensive Andy Dalton just to be the Bengals stater, and I like to find juicer odds when adding to my future portfolio. If my money is going to be tied up for several months, I chase sweeter payouts.
With that in mind, here are five players I’m looking at betting on for the 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Henry Ruggs, WR, Las Vegas Raiders, +1800 - One of the odds that jumped out to me immediately was Henry Ruggs and a chance to make 18 times my money. Ruggs is an explosive receiver with great route running skills and a chance to make big plays time and time again in this Raiders offense that was desperate for a No. 1 option on the outside. Ruggs should be a starter alongside Tyrell Williams and Hunter Renfrow, so he’s going to see a lot of targets this season. This price seems too good to pass up.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB, Kansas City Chiefs, +800 - Damien Williams had a breakout game in the Super Bowl, but he’s been in the league for a while and isn’t exactly a lock to be a starter in this KC backfield. Clyde Edwards-Helaire and his explosive ability could pencil him in for a starting job, and he’s certainly a better fit in this Chiefs offense. With so many other players to worry about in Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, Edwards-Helaire is going to have a clean box to run and countless opportunities to rack up the stats. Winning also helps players earn individual awards and the Chiefs will do plenty of that as well in 2020.
CeeDee Lamb, WR, Dallas Cowboys, +1500 - The Dallas Cowboys already had some decent weapons on the offensive side in Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper, but CeeDee Lamb adds some oomph on that side of the ball. Lamb and his ability to produce yards after the catch is unmatched, and he’s going to get favorable matchups with Copper and Michael Gallup sharing the same field. Lamb is an instant starter in this Cowboys offense and has a chance to become a star rather quickly on Americas Team.
D'Andre Swift, RB, Detroit Lions, +900 - The running back has won Offensive Rookie of the Year four of the last seven seasons and D'Andre Swift is the best back to come out of this class. A back who runs with great balance, has quick feet and is a threat as a receiver, Swift is a three-down player who can be trusted out of the gate and instantly become a key factor in this Lions offense. Kerryon Johnson has been solid in Detroit and should continue to play a role, but it’s Swift who has the higher upside and could eventually become the starter. Swift is going to make the Lions better from day one and he’ll be in this OROTY conversation from the beginning.
Tee Higgins, WR, Cincinnati Bengals, +3200 - If you’re looking for a big potential payout with a sleeper option, it’s Tee Higgins and a chance to make 32 times your money. Higgins is a big play receiver at 6’4” and scored a touchdown on 20 percent of 135 receptions at Clemson. Put Higgins on the field with AJ Green and Tyler Boyd, and the Bengals all of a sudden have an intriguing group of receivers who can make noise. Whether it’s Burrow or Dalton throwing the ball this season in Cincinnati, Higgins is going to make some plays this season and will give these odds a run for its money.
