A Two-Game NFL Preseason? - We touched on this one a little bit yesterday, and it seems to be an option that’s under major consideration for 2020—not to mention likely supported heavily by players and fans. This week, the NFL and the players’ union have been discussing the possibility of chopping the 2020 preseason in half, to two games. The thinking with this proposed scenario is that it would allow teams to ramp up a little more gradually into training camp and have time to get back to business after a long offseason. Let's check out the dates in this proposed setup.
NFL teams are allowed to report to camp 47 days before the first regular-season game. With the first preseason games pushed back a couple of weeks, that would put most training camp openings around July 28. Under this plan, the NFL would be able to restart more or less on time, with the added benefit of getting rid of two exhibition games that, honestly, fans don’t even really like. If this two-game preseason thing ends up working out, expect the league to at least consider implementing it beyond 2020.
Rams Running Backs News - The backfield in Los Angeles will be an interesting story during this 2020 NFL season, as RB Darrell Henderson is healthy again following an ankle injury in 2019. Henderson is a former third-round pick who has shown some flashes of excellence on the NFL field, and he’ll be in the mix to replace Todd Gurley in the Rams’ backfield.
In order for Henderson to carve out some significant playing time this year, he’s got some work to do in pass protection and finding lanes. That said, he’s got fresh legs and will be in the rotation with one of the more potentially talented RB groups in the league. Malcolm Brown and rookie Cam Akers will also be back there, and if LA can get their passing attack moving again to balance things out, they’re going to have a formidable offensive group on their hands.
Huge Season for Saints’ Jared Cook? - Despite a 2019 that started off shaky after an injury in training camp and some underwhelming numbers early in the season, New Orleans TE Jared Cook began clicking down the stretch and showed some great chemistry with QB Drew Brees. In the last eight games of the regular season, Cook came up with 28 passes for 537 yards and seven touchdowns—you can compare that with 15 catches for 168 yards and two touchdowns in his first six games.
Cook is getting a lot of offseason buzz around the NFL, and he could be in store for a big season in 2020. (So keep that in mind if you play fantasy football.) He’s got a lot of things working for him with Brees under center and the duo of Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders granting favorable matchups. It’s looking like it’ll be another dominant offense in New Orleans again in 2020, which is pretty much standard for the Saints these days. They’ll be fun to watch.
