Injury News - This week, word broke that New England RB Sony Michel had undergone surgery on his foot in May, a procedure designed to help relieve discomfort. As of yet, there’s no word on a timetable for his return to the field, but it seems like the Patriots have enough guys to cover if Michel misses any time.
The New England running game went from 20th in yards per attempt in 2018 to 25th in 2019, and couldn’t find much footing as the offense stalled down the stretch last year. Michel has been a key component of that rushing game over the last two years, but with his past knee issues and now this ankle injury the Patriots are probably going to spread the ball around to different RBs this season. James White, Rex Burkhead, Brandon Bolden and Damien Harris are all still on the roster and any of those guys could see significant playing time in 2020. All of that said, with Tom Brady gone, it's anyone's guess what New England will look like in this coming campaign.
One other quick note on the potential injury front today: Todd Gurley passed his physical in Atlanta this week and despite his past knee issues everything should be good to go there.
New City, New Raiders - With all the craziness of the NFL offseason, it’s been pretty easy to forget that the Raiders will be relocating to Las Vegas this year. That makes the franchise the ninth to relocate to a different city in the Super Bowl era—and the third time the Raiders have moved in the past 38 years. Historically, teams that move don’t fare too well in the first years with their new cities, but there’s a healthy buzz surrounding the Raiders right now and the team could very well make the playoffs in their first season. The Raiders will be an interesting team to watch this year, and we’ll all have to get used to saying “Las Vegas Raiders.”
Harbaugh on New NFL Guidelines: Ravens head coach John Harbaugh made some statements on the NFL’s proposed coronavirus guidelines this week, and it doesn’t seem like he’s hopeful. Harbaugh described conditions listed in the NFL memos during an interview, discussing the subject as “humanly impossible." He brought up practice issues like huddling, weight training and showering as areas where a six-foot distance simply doesn’t work.
It remains to be seen how all this will play out as we approach a new NFL season, but rest assured there will be more coaches and players speaking out on the guidelines as Harbaugh did this week. The league’s virtual workout period ends June 26, most training camps are scheduled to open in late July, and the first preseason game is still set for August 6. Until then, we’ll keep you posted in the daily updates.
