The Carolina Panthers face off with the New Orleans Saints Sunday in Week 17 NFC South NFL action from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
The Saints enter this matchup at 11-4 overall. New Orleans had lost consecutive games to the Eagles and Chiefs before beating the Vikings in their last game. As for Carolina, they’re currently 5-10 this year. The Panthers broke a three-game losing streak with a victory over Washington in Week 16. New Orleans has been pretty solid for most of the season despite a rocky 1-2 start. New Orleans went on a nice nine-game winning streak after that opening trio, but then lost to the Eagles 24-21 and the Chiefs 32-29. Last weekend, New Orleans got another W with a 52-33 victory over Minnesota.
In the win over the Vikings, New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees posted 311 yards with two interceptions and Emmanuel Sanders caught four balls for 83 yards. The real heart of the game was Alvin Kamara with his incredible 155 yards and six touchdowns off 22 carries.
Over on the Carolina side, it’s been a rough year. The Panthers began at 3-2 in their first five games, but then promptly went on a five-game losing streak. After beating the Lions, Carolina fell to the Vikings 28-27, the Broncos 32-27 and the Packers 24-16 before taking out Washington 20-13 last weekend.
In the win over the Team, Carolina’s Teddy Bridgewater posted 197 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Curtis Samuel added 52 yards off seven carries and also led the receivers with 106 yards off five catches.
The Saints are 6-1 ATS in their last seven versus the NFC South and 5-1 ATS in their last six versus the NFC. New Orleans is 6-2 ATS in their last eight games overall and 25-10 ATS versus a team with a losing record.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are 5-0 ATS in their last five January games and 4-0 ATS in their last four versus the NFC. Carolina is 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall and 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 home games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with New Orleans in this one. The Saints had a run of some relatively tepid offensive outings over the past couple of months, with 24 points or fewer in three of four games. Since then it’s been 29 points versus the Chiefs and a whopping 52 versus Minnesota, however. The running game was on point in that Vikings game, with a whopping seven touchdowns scored on the ground. If the Saints can get back to that rhythm (and maybe throw in a couple of pass TDs this time), I don’t see Carolina keeping up here.
