The Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs clash Saturday in NFL week 1 preseason action at Soldier Field. The Kansas City Chiefs have split their last 6 preseason games. The Chicago Bears have lost 5 of their last 8 preseason games.

Even with key changes at wide receiver, the Kansas City Chiefs likely aren’t going to give star quarterback Patrick Mahomes many reps throughout the preseason. That means you’re going to get a lot of Chad Henne, Shane Buechele and Dustin Crum from the backup spots. Clyde Edwards-Helaire has to prove he can be the star running back KC thought they were getting, as he’s been hit or miss his first two years. Defensively, the Chiefs are rather young and need guys to step up quickly. That includes first round picks George Karlaftis and Trent McDuffie, who are penciled in starting spots at the moment. Nick Bolton looks to build on a strong rookie season as well. The Chiefs are title contenders on paper, but the defense has some growing up to do before they start planning a parade.

The Chicago Bears are hoping quarterback Justin Fields can take that leap and improve the outlook of the team this season. It would help if the Bears find some reliability at receiver, as there’s serious question marks outside of Darnell Mooney. Offensive line is the biggest concern for the Bears this season, and head coach Matt Eberflus has made it clear every spot is available for competition. Rookie left tackle Braxton Jones has been impressive in camp and could be the biggest bright spot on this unit in no time. While the Bears defense has questions and position battles as well, Chicago is going absolutely nowhere this season if Fields is given no help at the skill positions and along the offensive line. That’s all that matters this camp. Give your young quarterback some help.

The Chiefs are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games on grass and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The Bears are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games and 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games overall. The over is 7-1 in Chiefs last 8 games overall. The under is 20-7 in Bears last 27 home games. The Chiefs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.

As I mentioned before, don’t expect the Chiefs to play Mahomes and play the fantasy football style they do in the regular season. It’s going to be conservative and likely ugly. The Chicago Bears on the other hand have 3 quarterbacks with significant playing experience. Yes, we know about Fields, but Trevor Siemian has nearly 7,000 career passing yards and 41 touchdowns, while Nathan Peterman has 135 career pass attempts. Against backup defenders, those two should be able to move the ball downfield. I’ll lay the points with the Bears, given the Chiefs likely rolling out nothing but reserves.
