The New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers clash Friday night in week 2 NFL Preseason action from Gillette Stadium.

The Carolina Panthers will be looking to build on their 23-21 win over the Washington Commanders last time out. PJ Walker threw for 136 yards on 10 of 19 passing while Baker Mayfield had 45 yards on 4 of 7 passing and Sam Darnold had a TD pass on 3 attempts. Spencer Brown led the Panthers’ ground attack with 10 carries for 36 yards and a score while Derek Wright had a team-high 46 receiving yards. Keith Kirkwood had 3 catches for 38 yards and Giovanni Ricci had a team-high 4 catches for 36 yards and Rashard Higgins had a TD grab for the Panthers in the win. On defense, Tae Hayes led the Panthers with 5 total tackles, all solo, while KAlon Burnes and Xavier Woods each had a sack.

The New England Patriots will hope to bounce back from their own 23-21 decision, ending up with a loss to the New York Giants last time out. Bailey Zappe threw for 205 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 19 of 32 passing while Brian Hoyer threw for 59 yards on 5 of 8 passing with a TD as well. Pierre Strong Jr. had a team-high 25 rushing yards while Kevin Harris had a rushing score as well. Kristian Wilkerson led the Pats with 8 catches for 99 yards while Tre Nixon had 4 grabs for 81 yards and Lil’Jordan Humphrey had 6 grabs for 62 yards and a TD. Tyquan Thornton also had a TD reception as well. Jalen Elliott led the way on defense with 8 total tackles as well as 5 solo tackles while Harvey Langi and Cameron McGrone each had 7 total tackles with 5 solo tackles and Josh Uche had a sack.

Carolina is 2-12 ATS in their last 14 games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 road games. New England is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 home games.

I get the case to be made for the Patriots here as I’m liking what I’m seeing from New England from a depth perspective. However, the Panthers have more top-tier starting spots up for grabs than the Pats do, and this is the game where Matt Rhule has laid out a deadline where he’s going to name the starting QB after this game. I expect this to be a game where Carolina’s quarterbacks and other skill players put their best foot forward to leave a lasting mark going into the final week of the preseason, so I’ll lean the way of the Panthers here.
