The Los Angeles Chargers and the Denver Broncos, and their two emerging young stars at QB, meet Sunday in Week 8 NFL action from Sports Authority Field.
Los Angeles comes into this one at 2-4 on the year. The Chargers had a four-game losing streak going, but were able to snap it last weekend with a 39-29 win over the Jaguars. As for the Broncos, they’re 2-4 as well. Denver won consecutive games over the Jets and patriots but fell to the Chiefs last weekend. The Chargers started out the season well with a win over the Bengals, but then hit the skids for four games before getting a win over the Jaguars in Week 7. The good news is that Los Angeles has generally been scoring well and has been competitive; each of the Chargers losses was by seven points or fewer.
In the win over Jacksonville last weekend, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert put up 347 yards with three touchdowns, and also led the rush with 66 yards and a score off nine carries. Tops in receiving for Los Angeles was Keenan Allen with 10 receptions for 125 yards total.
Over on the Broncos’ side, it’s been a pretty up-and-down campaign. Denver has a couple of good wins over the lowly Jets and the so-so Patriots, but other than that it’s been a struggle. The Broncos have scored 18 points or fewer in four of six games and don’ have much consistency on offense.
In the loss to the Chiefs last weekend, Denver quarterback Drew Lock posted 254 yards with two interceptions. Albert Okwuegbunam had 60 yards from seven catches to lead the Broncos receivers, and Phillip Lindsay was the top rusher with nine carries for 79 yards.
The Chargers are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four versus the AFC and 4-0-1 ATS in their last five road games. Los Angeles is 2-5-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record and 2-5 ATS in the last seven games in Week 8.
Meanwhile, Denver is 7-1 ATS in their last eight games in Week 8 and 4-1 ATS versus a team with a losing record. The Broncos are 4-1 ATS in their last five versus the AFC and 7-19-1 ATS in their last 27 versus the AFC West.
PICK: Sticking with the Chargers here. Los Angeles has had a couple of dud games, but they’ve also scored at least 20 points in four of their last five outings and 27 or more in each of their last three. The Chargers have faced some pretty good competition (Buccaneers, Saints, Chiefs, etc.) this season and performed admirably so I think LA will be just fine in this one.
