The Washington Capitals showed a lot of promise in their 6-4 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night. Adam Oates needed some time to get his system understood by the players last year but once he did his team went on an incredible run that landed them in the post season. On Tuesday they took on the defending Stanley Cup champions and did a lot of good things in their first game. Mikhail Grabovski showed exactly what he's capable of and Alex Ovechkin proved he hasn't lost anything on his wicked slap shot. If Braden Holtby can continue to progress and truly be the lock down goalie the organization expects him to be they've got a chance to be a playoff team this year. They'll need to win games like the one they have in front of them on Thursday night however, because losses to teams like Calgary on home ice could go a long way in keeping them out of the second season.
In Calgary the Flames have been making more noise for what they're doing off the ice than anything else. The addition of Brian Burke to the front office should help them in player personnel moving forward but this team still doesn't have the talent it needs to compete with some of the better teams in the Western Conference this season. It's going to take some time and for the fans in Calgary it's a shame that the organization didn't truly start to rebuild years ago. Curtis Glencross, Michael Cammalleri, and Mikael Backlund are all good forwards but this team just doesn't have anthing dynamic about it. This is a club that really struggled with Miikka Kiprusoff in net and with him now gone they're going to have even more problems. They can compete on home ice but when they're on the road expect pretty poor results for the Flames this year.
