The Buffalo Sabres got their season underway on Wednesday night in Detroit and showed us what we might see a lot of from them this year. This is a hockey club that is really going to struggle to score goals if Thomas Vanek isn't scoring, and that was evident in their 2-1 loss to the Red Wings. Ron Rolston will get this group to play hard but that can only take you so far against teams that just have more talent than you. Zemgus Girgensons got the only Buffalo goal of the night but it came with the team trailing and under eight minutes left in regulation. The Sabres were outshot 34-20 and didn't seem to have the puck the entire night. Ryan Miller was strong in his debut, which is encouraging news if you're a Sabres fan. He stopped 32 shots and looked poised and in control in the crease. They'll try and pick up their first win on Friday night but it won't be easy with the Ottawa Senators coming to town.
Erik Karlsson might be the most dynamic playmaking defenseman in the league and he'll bring his skills to the First Niagra Center as the Senators open their season. Karlsson surprised everyone by returning last season after a horrific achilles injury that made some of us wonder if he'd every be the same player again. Not only did he prove he's fine, but now he's had a whole offseason to really get things together. The addition of Bobby Ryan adds to the depth of the Senators and provides them with a much needed scoring winger. With Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner in net and a very good coach in Paul MacLean behind the bench, the Senators have all the makings of a team that could make a serious post season run this year.
