Alexander Ovechkin has gotten off to a flying start this season and that’s great news for the Washington Capitals and their fans. It took him half a season last year to really get going but the big Russian appears to have picked up where he left off and single handedly willed the Caps to a victory the other night. He’s now got three goals and two assists in five games and scored twice in the second period to cut Calgary’s lead from 4-1 to 4-3. Nicklas Backstrom scored the game tying goal in the third period and Ovechkin and Mikhail Grabovski scored in the shootout to give the Capitals the win. Braden Holtby was pulled after allowing three first period goals but Michal Neuvirth came in and settled things down, making 27 saves in the win. They’ll be in Dallas on Saturday night taking on a Stars club that’s coming off a rough loss in their opener.
Dallas didn’t get off to the type of start they were looking for as they fell to the Panthers by a score of 4-2. Brenden Dillon’s goal gave the Stars a 2-1 lead in the third period but they were unable to build on the lead. They were outshot by the Panthers 39-27 in the game, including 15-8 over the final 20 minutes as they watched Florida score three times to take the game. Kari Lehtonen allowed three goals on 38 shots in the loss. Alex Chiasson scored to tie things up in the second period. This could be a rough year for Dallas as they try to adjust to Lindy Ruff’s new system behind the bench. They can’ t afford to fall into a hole early so they need to find a way to pick up points, especially on home ice.
