It might have ended in a loss but the New York Islanders proved again on Friday night that they've got a lot to look forward to. Off to a great start this year the Islanders lost for the second time this year in Chicago against the Blackhawks but they put up quite a fight. They went toe-to-toe with the defending Stanley Cup Champions for 60 minutes and came up just short with a 3-2 defeat. After falling behind by two goals early in the first period it looked like things might unravel for a New York club that was playing backup goaltender Kevin Poulin in net. Instead the Islanders answered right back with a couple of goals that tied the game up at 2-2 heading into the first intermission. They didn't generate much offense the rest of the way as they tried their best to limit an explosive Blackhawks offense. Still this game should be a great learning experience for this young club and one that they can build on moving forward. Now with a flight to Nashville and a quick turnaround they're going to have to put those young legs to the test if they want to pull out a victory.
Nashville's 1-3-0 start to the year has left a lot to be desired and Thursday night's home loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs was the bottom of the barrel. The Predators couldn't solve Jonathan Bernier at all and Pekka Rinne allowed four goals on just 26 shots as they dropped this one by a final of 4-0. Goal scoring has always been the biggest cause for concern under head coach Barry Trotz and it doesn't look like things will be much different this season. They're going to need timely goal scoring and great play from their goaltender if they want to make a run at a post season berth. Saturday night should be a good test for them because they're playing a club that isn't the strongest on the backend but one that has a lot of firepower up front. Two teams with different personalities going head-to-head on Saturday night in the Music City.
