The Dallas Stars head into Colorado looking to hand the Avalanche their first loss of the season. Colorado meanwhile heads back home after a successful road trip and they’ll look to deal the Stars their third loss of the season.
The Stars have split their first four games of the season but are coming into this one after a loss and will need to refocus as they catch the red hot Avalanche on the road in Denver. Dallas is a team that was expected to do some damage last year but after some foiled plans the team went another route and unloaded some contracts in preparation for a mild rebuild. The Stars shipped out Loui Eriksson in return for Tyler Seguin who is playing very well in his new digs and they also acquired Shawn Horcoff from the Oilers who brings a veteran presence to an otherwise young roster. However, the Stars were dealt some tough news as starting goaltender Kari Lehtonen was placed on the injured reserve leaving the goaltending duties with Dan Ellis who has been a journeyman back up during his NHL career.

Colorado meanwhile has been the talk of the NHL as they’re one of three undefeated teams joining the Blues and Sharks atop the NHL standings but of the three without a loss it is the Avs that everyone least expected to be here. Colorado had the first overall selection in last year’s draft after finishing with the worst record in the Western Conference and the second worst overall but have quickly turned that around behind the new direction of Patrick Roy. The Avs were never really a bad team as they have tons of young talent they just couldn’t seem to get things rolling last year which played out very well for them this season. While it is inevitable that the Avs are going to lose a game sometime soon and I had inclinations to take the Stars in this spot but without Lehtonen I think Dallas plays more conservatively in their own end and don’t create as many counter attacks which will play into the favour of a very fast Colorado team. Take the Avs here although the price isn’t appealing.
