The Line: Detroit Red Wings / Ottawa Senators --- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The Ottawa Senators look to move above the .500 mark with a win in the Motor City on Wednesday while the Red Wings and former Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson look for a big home ice victory over the pesky Sens.
The Senators were pegged to be league doormats over the past few seasons as they were in the midst of a complete rebuild but they shocked the hockey world in both years as they made the playoffs and even swept the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of last year’s postseason. However, the success the Senators generated raised the bar of expectation this season and while it is still early in the year the Sens appear as though they’re going to take a step back. Much of the focus in this game will be on the storyline between the Senators and former captain Daniel Alfredsson who is playing in his first game against his former club albeit in Detroit and not in Ottawa where we are expecting a very chilly reception. Craig Anderson is likely to get the call in goal for the Sens while the Red Wings respond with Jimmy Howard.

The Red Wings sit one point back of the Maple Leafs in the Atlantic division through their first ten games and are coming off a tough loss at home against the San Jose Sharks who squeaked out a shootout victory at the Joe on Monday night. Jimmy Howard was sensational in the crease as he recorded a shutout despite the loss and his play has been a huge part of Detroit’s success so far this season and will continue to be throughout. Detroit will be playing with an edge for their new teammate as he plays against his former club but to be honest I don’t see this playing as much of a factor since the game is in Detroit and not Ottawa. When the teams return to Scotiabank Place I can see the Alfredsson angl playing more of a factor but in this one I see it as just another game between two hard working teams. This game is a toss up for me in terms of an outright winner but I love the total as two of the best goalies in the game are going toe to toe and while the Sens give up way too many shots I think Anderson will hold his ground here and we get a 2-1 type of final.
