The Carolina Hurricanes head into Minnesota on Thursday night looking for their third win in a row and fifth of the season while Minnesota looks for their second straight after blanking the Preds in their last outing.
The Hurricanes were expected by many to be a team to watch out for in the Eastern Conference last season as they brought in some big pieces, but the injury to Cam Ward and the subsequent struggles dropped the Canes out of the playoff race. However, now that Ward is back and playing like he wants a starting job in Sochi in a couple months spirits are up in Raleigh and I think the Canes are on their way back up to relevance. Carolina has a very nice core up front and while their defensive unit could be beter they aren’t bad and with Ward in the crease it definitely alleviates a lot of pressure the blue line might endure. The Canes can continue their ascent up the standings with another win tonight but face a tough task ahead of them as Minnesota is playing very well.

The Wild have finally turned the corner after stumbling out of the gates and now that they’re starting to play more of a two way game they’re coming away with victories they should have. Minny was a team just like the Canes a year ago that had huge expectations but flat line results but are using their inadequacies last season as motivation for this year. The Wild did make the playoffs though which is something the Canes can’t say but either way they’re looking for more and it looks like they could get there this season. This looks to be a very tightly contested game as both teams have great goaltending and depth up front and while I think the Wild are a bit deeper on the blue line the Canes are deeper up front and I think that makes the difference here. Great value on a team playing well and I like Carolina in this spot.
