It was their first game after making the big splash and acquiring Thomas Vanek and it came against their hated rivals on home ice. But it was the opponent that appeared to have the jump from the drop of the puck and Vanek was hardly noticeable alongside John Tavares in their first game together. The result was a 3-2 loss that saw the New York Rangers score twice in the third period to rally for the victory. The Islanders have lost four of their last five and opponents are seemingly scoring at will against them. Three goals might not seem like much to give up but when you consider the Rangers couldn't score against anyone three goals is a ton. The Ottawa Senators haven't had the easiest time of late either and they've given up 11 goals in their past two games against the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks. Those are two pretty dynamic offensive hockey clubs so it's a little more understandable for them than the Islanders but these two teams are definitely struggling defensively right now. You never know if the game is going to continue to play out the way things have lately or if both teams focus on buttoning up and shutting things down. They're both struggling but I like the fact that the Senators have been losing tight games to some really tough competition.
