The Wild and Capitals do battle in Washington as two teams who have turned the corner meet up for what should be an exciting contest.
The Wild have won three straight games and have won nine on the year putting them in third place in the Central division behind the Avalanche and Blackhawks. They head into Washington tonight looking for their fourth in a row but they’ll be hard pressed against a Capitals team who is starting to hit their stride and who currently sit in second place in the Atlantic division. The Wild build from the net out and Josh Harding has been sensational in the Minnesota crease to add to a stellar blue line and a very deep offensive core. However, Minnesota has been subpar on the road with just two victories outside of the Xcel Center and head into the Verizon Center which is a very tough building to get a victory. Harding goes head to head with Braden Holtby who will be manning the crease for the home town Caps.
Washington stumbled out of the gates to start the year but have since turned things around with their own three game winning streak and they have won seven of their last 10 games overall that has launched them into second place in their division. The Caps have been able to generate some secondary scoring as the likes of Joel Ward has stepped up to fill the offensive void and combining that with the primary offensive threat from Alex Ovechkin and Nick Backstrom gives the Caps a dangerous unit up front. However, the Capitals still haven’t really impressed me all that much despite their recent surge and while they’re a tough home team and the Wild aren’t as good on the road I think they’re the better team and present a tough task defensively for the Caps to deal with. I’m taking a shot here with Minnesota on the road.
