The New York Islanders were desperate for a victory on Saturday night when they hosted the Detroit Red Wings. It turned into a back-and-forth hockey game that needed extra time and a skills competition for New York to finally come out on top. John Tavares gave the Islanders the lead in the first period with his ninth goal of the season but the Red Wings tied it just nine seconds later. Detroit would take a 2-1 lead into the second period and would have another lead of 3-2 but goals from Casey Cizikas and Brock Nelson would even things at 3-3 heading into the third. Cal Clutterbuck gave the Islanders a 4-3 lead that looked like it would hold up but New York surrendered a goal in the final minute and it really felt like this was going to be another one that the Islanders let get away. Instead, Frans Nielsen finished off the shootout to lift the Islanders to a 5-4 victory. Kevin Poulin made 19 saves on 22 shots in relief of Evgeni Nabokov who will be out indefinitely with a lower body injury. This is Poulin's chance to show that he can be the Islanders No. 1 goaltender now and moving forward but it would still behoove Garth Snow to go out and find someone else who can play. The Toronoto Maple Leafs will be a nice test for Poulin on Tuesday night.

Toronto bounced back nicely after Friday night's loss on the road in Buffalo against the Sabres. The Maple Leafs hosted the Sabres at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday and despite being outshot 35-22 found a way to take down Buffalo. James van Riemsdyk scored twice in the first period, his eight and ninth goals of the season, and Nikolai Kulemin and Mason Raymond also scored for the Maple Leafs who improved to 12-7-1 on the season. James Reimer made 33 saves in the win as the Randy Carlyle continues to rotate between Reimer and Jonathan Berniner. It's not a bad problem to have but at some point it would be good for Carlyle and his club if one of these goaltenders can distinguish themselves over the other. This is a game the Leafs should win but the line in this one is a lot, especially considering the Islanders can put the puck in the net.
