The Red Wings’ ugly slide took another turn south in a losing effort on Saturday but they’ll look to turn things around Sunday against a similarly struggling Sabres team.
Detroit is in the midst of a slump we haven’t seen from them in what seems like decades but with just two victories in their last 10 contests the Wings are playing some of the worst hockey I have ever seen them play in the last 10 seasons. While the Wings were still collecting points via overtime or the shootout they haven’t been able to come away victorious on a consistent basis over the past month and as such they find themselves slipping in the Eastern Conference standings. The Wings have slipped into 5th place in the Atlantic division but they catch a Sabres team who is going through a terrible season and has lost three straight contests heading into this battle. Jonas Gustavsson will get the nod here as he goes up against Ryan Miller.

The Sabres have been abysmal this season and they have already cleaned house in the front office and on the ice as former head coach Ron Rolston, former GM Darcy Regier and former captain Thomas Vanek have all been shipped out of town. Buffalo will look for just their sixth win in 25 tries this season which puts them in last place in the league by a comfortable margin and things don’t appear to be getting any easier. Buffalo is likely to continue to make moves as the season progresses as it looks like Terry Pegula and the ownership group is prepared to do a full face lift and start from scratch with this team just a year removed from spending a ton on free agents. However, I think this is actually a decent spot for the home team as they’re getting great value against a team who is also struggling mightily and with Miller playing against his home town team I expect he will put up quite an effort.
