The New Jersey Devils followed up their three game winning streak by losing three straight. If not for a couple of late goals in the third period against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night the Devils might have been held to their third consecutive game of just one goal. Goal scoring has been the issue all season long for the Devils and with no savior on the horizon the Devils are going to have to find a way to generate more offense. Of course, that usually comes at the expense of the defense and that's something that New Jersey has done really well to start the year. The reason the Devils have won as many games as they have to start the year is that they are one of the best in the NHL at limiting opponents shots and opportunities throughout the course of the game. That can keep you in things but it's hard to win consistently that way and the Devils are finding that out now. Head coach Peter Deboer hasn't played that way in the past but seeing the limited offensive talent he has this season Deboer seems to have scaled things back a little bit for New Jersey. The Devils will get a chance for some revenge on Friday night against the Hurricanes but will have to generate more than the 22 shots they got on goal on Wednesday night. Carolina got goals from Tuomo Ruutu, Ron Hainsey, and Patrick Dwyer in the second period to put the game out of reach after Justin Falk scored in the opening frame. Cam Ward gave up a couple of late goals as the Hurricanes held on for the 4-3 victory, but he wasn't tested much on the night. This is a game where it will be interesting if either team tries to generate more or if they both are content to sit back and let things play out the way they did on Wednesday. Martin Brodeur's record dropped to 7-6-2 on the year and whether it's Brodeur or Cory Schneider in goal on Friday night it won't matter if the Devils can't get some offense going. We had the Hurricanes at really good value as underdogs on the road on Wednesday night and nothing has changed here except Carolina gets the Devils at home in this one.
