John Tortorella's return to Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers didn't go exactly as planned. While the Vancouver Canucks came out strong to start the game, they couldn't get the saves from Roberto Luongo when they needed them and found themselves in an early hole. Rubbing a little salt in the wound was Rangers forward Chris Kreider, a player who waas repeatedly bumped down in the lineup, scratched, and demoted to the American Hockey League under Tortorella's reign. The youngster scored twice in the first period and Rick Nash added a goal early in the second that sent Lungon to the bench. Vancouver trailed 4-0 before David Booth's goal late in the second cut the lead to three. That's as close as the Canucks would get as they'd watch Kreider record the hat trick in the third period, but Daniel Sedin tapped in his 10th of the year on the power play as the Canucks fell by a final of 5-2. Vancouver outshot New York 37-24 in the game, but the first period goals put them in a hole early. There's no time for the Canucks to sit and think about this one as they travel to Carolina to take on the Hurricanes in an afternoon affair on Sunday.

The Canucks and Hurricanes might be playing in front of an empty building with the Panthers playing at home at the same time. That's not good news for a Hurricanes club that can use all the help it can get right now. Carolina is trying to bounce back from a disastarous third period against the New Jersey Devils on Friday night that cost them a victory. Leading 2-1 on second period goals from Jeff Skinner and Jordan Staal, the Hurricanes allowed four straight in the third period as they fell to the Devils by a score of 5-2. Carolina managed just 18 shots on goal in the game and that's not going to cut it on Sunday afternoon against a power play Canucks club. This is a tough spot for the Canucks who played a physical hockey game yesterday in New York and had to travel to Carolina, but at the end of the day Vancouver is still the better team here. If the Canucks can jump out to a lead and not fall behind by a couple of goals like they did on Saturday they should be able to find a way to win here.
