The Hurricanes head into DC look to upend the Capitals as these two former Southeast division rivals square off at the Verizon Center.
The Hurricanes were a team that was expected to do some damage in the Eastern Conference last season considering the quality in the Southeast division and the additions they made in the offseason but an injury to goaltender Cam Ward derailed any Cup aspirations. It looks like more of the same of the Canes this season as they haven’t been able to find any consistency and now head into Washington to take on a Capitals team who has been playing better of late having won their last two contests. Ward did miss some time earlier this season but is healthy now and gives the Canes the best chance to win in the crease so he will get the nod against Braden Holtby of the Capitals as these two potential Olympic teammates square off.

The Capitals have been consistently inconsistent this season as they are incredibly streaky and seem to go on runs that make them look like Cup contenders and some that have them as lottery winners. It is no secret that much of the success of the Caps depends on Alex Ovechkin as he is the most dangerous scorer in the game and definitely one of the best players in the world and usually when he is on so are the Caps. Washington will look to lay a beating down on the Hurricanes but these two teams always seem to play each other very tight and figuring out a winner is a coin flip. There is a ton of value with the Canes in this one but I don’t have enough confidence to pull the trigger for an outright win. Either way I see this being more of a tight checking game in which the Canes focus on slowing down Ovechkin and I see this staying under the number.
