The Edmonton Oilers seek their seventh win in their last 10 contests as they host the Carolina Hurricanes at Rexall Place in what is a rematch of the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals.
The Hurricanes are a team that should very much be in the mix come playoff time in the Eastern Conference but they have been very disappointing over the last two seasons yet somehow sit in third place in the Metro division. Carolina has won three straight games and has moved above the .500 mark which hopefully indicates they’re on the rise and on the right track to turning their season around but they face an Oilers team who is starting to play with confidence. Carolina is likely to go with Cam Ward in this spot who won the Conn Smythe as a rookie goaltender against the Oilers in that 2006 Cup final as he looks to once again prove he is worthy of an MVP award against an Oilers offense that can score with the best of them.

Edmonton is another team who has been incredibly disappointing over the past few seasons as they haven’t been back to the playoffs since that 2006 Cup loss to the Hurricanes and they have had a handful of lottery picks since. The Oilers and their management have made it clear that they want to win now and that the overhaul is finished but with a blue line that is still depleted in terms of talent and continuous question marks in the crease have the Oil in a state of limbo once again. This has the makings of a statement game either way as the Oilers can come out and smash the Canes giving them some momentum moving forward or they’ll fall flat and back into a tailspin of futility which as they know can be very tough to crawl out of. Either way I see this game being highly energetic and I think the lamp will be lit a plenty in a game that should go over the total.
