The Jets head into Colorado looking for a statement victory while the Avalanche look to shake off an ugly loss to the Blackhawks.
The Winnipeg Jets head into Mile High looking to upend the Colorado Avalanche and trim their divisional deficit in the process but they’ll have their hands full with a team looking to make up for a hideous loss. Winnipeg is coming off a win in their last contest but they have been largely inconsistent this season and as such it might cost them a place in the Western Conference playoffs. The Jets are 10 points behind the Avalanche coming into tonight’s contest and are 22 back of the division leading Blackhawks so while a Central division crown is all but out of the question the Jets can take a stab at a low playoff berth. Winnipeg is a frustrating bunch as they’re a better team than their record indicates but with the strength of the West being what it is I don’t think Winnipeg has the talent level to compete with the big dogs and I think it’ll be another frustrating and active offseason for the Jets. However, they are going with Al Montoya in this spot who in my mind should be the team’s starter and I think he gives Winnipeg a better chance at winning than Ondrej Pavelec.
The Avs head into tonight’s contest with Winnipeg coming off a debilitating loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in which they were waxed for seven goals and definitely didn’t play the part of Cup contender. Rookie head coach Patrick Roy has the Avs in a great spot mid-way through the season especially considering they landed the top overall selection in last July’s draft due to last season’s futility but I think fans in Denver are expecting more than just a playoff berth this season. Colorado has a ton of team speed and are well balanced offensively but their blue line still has a lot to be desired and their goaltending is good but not great. Colorado are huge favourites here which I don’t understand considering how they played against Chicago in their last outing but the Jets are way too inconsistent to generate any sort of confidence. I will side with the under here as I expect a solid outing from Montoya as he will have to play well if the Jets want any shot at winning.
