NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Flyers, tonight's TV schedule and more
January 1, 2014
Let’s all pop a couple of aspirin and try to recover from that New Year’s Eve onslaught of NHL action last night. We’ve got two more games to look forward to today, in what’s become a tradition of hockey on the first day of the new year. While we’re waiting on those pucks to drop, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy names out there who are making headlines this morning. Here’s the latest.
Martin Brodeur, G, New Jersey Devils: Brodeur not only had a heavy hand defensively for the Devils last night against the Penguins, but he also chipped in on offense. He posted 19 saves on 20 shots during the 3-1 victory, and was able to notch his second assist of the season on Jersey’s middle goal. Contributing offensively were Adam Henrique (one goal; one assist) and Michael Ryder (one goal; one assist)
Up next is a home game against the Blackhawks on Friday, then a trip to Buffalo on Saturday.

Jaden Schwartz, LW, St. Louis Blues: Schwartz has been on fire lately, and he kept his awesome streak going last night against the Wild. He managed a goal and an assist in the 2-1 victory, which gives him scores in six straight games. Schwartz has 14 goals and 16 assists so far this season.
We’ll get to see him in action tomorrow at home against the Kings. After that, St. Louis is home again Saturday against the Blue Jackets.
Erik Cole, RW, Dallas Stars: Cole has been peppering in some nice performances recently, and he notched another one last night against the Kings. He managed a goal and an assists in the 3-2 L.A. victory, which gives him five goals and three assists in the last six games. On the season, Cole has 10 scores and 10 helpers in 39 outings.
Tomorrow, the Stars host Montreal. After that, they’ll host the Red Wings on Saturday before hitting the road next week.
Wayne Simmonds, RW, Philadelphia Flyers: After something of a dry period, Simmonds has been on fire over the past several games. He notched another two-point evening against Calgary last night, with a pair of assists in the 4-1 road win. That makes seven goals and four assists in just the last seven games for Simmonds, who has 12 scores and 14 helpers through 40 outings this season.
The Flyers have three more road games coming up before they can return home. They’ll be in Colorado tomorrow and Phoenix on Saturday.
NHL Daily Schedule: Two games are on the schedule for today, including the annual Winter Classic, which will take place in Ann Arbor this year. Here’s a look at the complete schedule, along with the start times and TV networks where you can catch both games.
