NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Winter Classic, tonight's TV schedule and more
January 2, 2014
After a pretty slow day yesterday--with all the attention focused on the annual Winter Classic--the NHL will be kicking back into gear today with 10 matchups on the schedule. Let’s take a closer look at some of the notable names around the league while we’re waiting on those pucks to drop this evening. Here’s the latest.
Jonathan Bernier, G, Toronto Maple Leafs: Another Winter Classic is in the books, and it was a very competitive game. The Leafs took a win over the Red Wings in front of over 105,000 fans, taking a 3-2 victory after a three-round shootout. Bernier was a busy man, stopping 43 shots. Helping out offensively was Tyler Bozak, who notched a goal and the deciding shootout score.
The Leafs are back in action on Saturday, when they’ll host the Rangers at home. After that, they’re off until another home game against the Islanders on Tuesday.

Valtteri Filppula, C, Tampa Bay Lightning: In last night’s other game, the Lightning used a very busy second period to help take care of the Canucks. The team scored three goals in the second period, including one from Filppula, on their way to a 4-2 win. He also added an assist in the third. In just the past eight games, Filppula has five scores and seven helpers.
The Lightning’s four-game road trip continues tomorrow in Calgary. They’ll also be in Edmonton on Sunday, then finish it up in Winnipeg on Tuesday.
