The San Jose Sharks look to string together consecutive victories while visiting the Florida Panthers at the BB&T Center on Thursday night.
The Sharks began the current road trip with a 2-1 victory in a shootout against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. San Jose held a 1-0 lead against the Caps until Alex Ovechkin scored an extremely skillful game-tying goal from a tough angle, but the resilient Sharks would prove to be the better side Tuesday night. Antti Niemi held the Capitals to a single goal on 36 shots and scoreless in the shootout. San Jose is 6-4-0 in its last ten contests, but has not been able to put together back-to-back winning games since December 29th.

The Florida Panthers are near the bottom of every major statistical category in the NHL, but the club Peter Horachek has the club skating strong of late. The Panthers are 4-1-2 in the last seven games. On Tuesday, the Panthers rallied to a 4-0 lead against the Islanders. Florida only allowed the lead to dissipate somewhat before closing out New York by a final score of 4-2. Tim Thomas has been the catalyst for the Panther’s strong play, allowing two or less goals in eight of the last nine games with a 1.75 GAA in his last three games.
The Sharks and Panthers have not met yet this season, but the Sharks are 0-4 in the last four meetings, which I cannot give too much weight since the stat dates back to 2008. As mentioned, San Jose is 0-4 in the last four games following a win, but the Panthers are 0-4 in the last four games following a win as well. Antti Niemi has been a brick wall for the Sharks of late, but the same can be said for Tim Thomas on behalf of the Panthers. The Sharks are certainly the better team in this game, but with the rollercoaster of wins and losses by the Sharks the Panthers are worth a flyer as a huge home dog.
