NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Avalanche, Flyers, Tonight's TV Schedule and More
January 19, 2014
Yesterday was a crazy busy Saturday in the NHL. Today we’ll be slowing down a bit, with just three matchups on the schedule, but should still see some pretty good hockey. While we’re waiting on game-time, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy players out there who are making headlines this morning. Here’s the latest.
Derek Stepan, C, New York Rangers: After some pretty spotty stat sheets recently, Stepan broke free yesterday against Ottawa. He posted a goal and two assists in the 4-1 road win, which gives him eight scores and 22 helpers so far this year. Cam Talbot stepped up between the pipes for 30 saves in the victory.
The Rangers finish the week at 3-1, and they’ll get right back to it today. They host the Capitals, then the Islanders (Tuesday) and the Blues (Thursday).

Martin St. Louis, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning: Okay, we know the Lightning lost to the Sharks yesterday, but we’ve got to spend a moment on St. Louis. He tied a franchise record in the loss, scoring all four goals of the 5-4 matchup. On the other side, Joe Pavelski had a big night, posting three goals of his own.
Up next for the Lightning is a road game against the Hurricanes today. After that they host Ottawa (Thursday) and Colorado (Saturday).
Andrej Meszaros, D, Philadelphia Flyers: Trailing 3-4 heading into the third period against the Islanders yesterday, things looked dire for the Flyers. They were able to overcome the deficit, however, and ended up taking it 6-4. Meszaros had a heavy hand in the victory with two goals. He now has three scores and eight assists in his last 10 games.
The Flyers get another busy week coming up, and their schedule looks like this: tomorrow at New York (Islanders), Tuesday home against Carolina, Thursday at Columbus and Saturday home against Boston.
Nick Holden, D, Colorado Avalanche: There were plenty of offensive contributors for the Avalanche last night, but we’ll focus on Holden for the moment. He posted a career night against Nashville, with two goals and an assist in the 5-4 victory. That gives Holden four scores and six helpers on the season so far.
The Avs have a three-game week ahead of them. They’ll play at home against Toronto on Tuesday, then head down to visit the Panthers Friday and the Lightning on Saturday.
NHL Daily Schedule: Just six teams will be out on the ice today, but we should see a couple of good matchups mixed in there. Here’s a look at the complete schedule, along with the start times and TV networks carrying the games.
