NHL Injury Updates 2/5: Couture, Stamkos and More

February 5, 2014

See the Latest Odds

We’re in for a pretty slow evening in the NHL tonight, which makes this morning a good opportunity to visit with some of the injury situations around the league and see how everyone’s doing. We’ve got our usual mix of key players with various ailments today, so here’s a closer look at what we can be expecting in the near future.

Matt Moulson, LW, Buffalo Sabres: We got an update on Moulson’s status yesterday, and the news is pretty good considering the circumstances. Previously, all we had known about his recovery from his upper-body injury was that he’d be out until sometime after the Olympics. The latest news on him is that he’ll be good to go right after the break, which is definitely one of the better scenarios fans could hope for.
Moulson hasn’t played since January 30, and has been a key contributor for Buffalo. He’s got 15 goals and 18 assists in 51 games so far.

Steven Stamkos, C, Tampa Bay Lightning: We’ve finally got a concrete return date on Stamkos, so it appears his long road to recovery is nearly at an end. He’s scheduled to come back from his leg injury on Saturday against the Red Wings, which would be his first action since all the way back on November 11. The first order of business, however, is getting an X-ray to make sure everything is good to go on his leg. That’ll probably happen today.
It’s been quite a journey for Stamkos, who has been making incremental progress over the last week or two. He’ll be welcomed back with open arms, having provided 14 goals and nine assists in his 17 games this season.

Jonas Gustavsson, G, Detroit Red Wings: Speaking of the aforementioned Red Wings, let’s check in on Gustavsson. He caused some concern among Detroit faithful on Monday, when he came out of the Wings’ eventual 2-0 win over the Canucks after the first period. He was experiencing dizziness, which led some to believe he was dealing with some sort of illness. Gustavsson wasn’t officially ruled out for the rest of the game, but never did make it back.
Detroit doesn’t play again until tomorrow on the road against the Panthers, so we’ll likely get some sort of update on his status in advance of that game. In the meantime, he’s scheduled to be practicing today.

Kimmo Timonen, D, Philadelphia Flyers: Timonen seems like he’s getting close. Here’s what we know on him at the moment: He’s been out for the last two games with a foot injury, most recently Monday’s win over the Sharks. The good news is that he’s been skating, so a return doesn’t seem too far off. He’s considered day-to-day.
Timonen’s next opportunity to hit the ice is tomorrow at home against the Avalanche. We won’t know for sure until closer to game-time, but at this point we’d put him at pretty good odds of making a return for that one.

Logan Couture, C, San Jose Sharks: We’ll finish off today by visiting with Couture. Some dim news--but not completely unexpected news--emerged about his condition yesterday. He won’t be returning to the ice this week; He’ll have to wait until after the Olympic break to come back from his hand injury.
Couture last played on January 5. He has 14 goals and 21 assists in 43 games so far this season.
