The Czech Republic looks to get in the win column when they face Latvia in game two of the Sochi Olympics.
The Czech Republic fell victim to Sweden's ultra fast start in a 4-2 defeat to kick off the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The Swedes pounced on the Czechs for four goals in just over 24 minutes before the offense went silent. They turned things over to the defense and Henrik Lundquist and he didn't disappoint after Jaromir Jagr and Marek Zidlicky cut the lead to 4-2, Lundqvist stopped 15 third period shots while the team survived three power plays. Lundqvist finished with 27 stops and Jakub Kovar took the loss with all four goals allowed before getting the hook.
Despite being devoid of the NHL talent that most countries have in the Sochi Olympics Latvia gave Switzerland everything they could handle before falling 1-0 in their tournament opener. The Swiss are viewed as an up an comer but they ran in to the rock solid goaltending of Edgars Masalskis who stopped 38 shots before allowing the game's only score with a mere eight seconds remaining in a devastating loss. Not unexpected but obviously painful as Simon Moser finally solved Masalskis who single handedly gave unheralded Latvia a shot at a huge upset despite seeing his team outshot 39-21 as the Swiss and their NHL talent constantly threatened.
I think Latvia deserves kudos for their performance in the opening round but they run smack dab in to the Czech Republic that have to win and I don't see an upset here against the the talented Czechs...
