With the Olympic break over and the NHL schedule getting going again tonight, it’s a good time to take a look at some of the trade rumors that have been floating around out there. We’ve still got a little over a week until the league’s trade deadline (Wednesday, March 5 at 3:00 PM ET), and we could see a flurry of last-minute deals happening before then. Let’s examine a few of the more prevalent rumors out there and the players involved.

Ryan Miller, G, Buffalo Sabres: One rumor that’s been making the rounds lately (well, all season, really) concerns Miller and his potential exit from Buffalo. With the Sabres trying to prune salary and age from their roster, the 10-year veteran is a prime candidate for a trade.
One team that’s been mentioned as a potential fit for Miller is the St. Louis Blues. They’re reportedly looking for an experienced net-minder to provide some depth and could make a play in the next week. Expect a draft pick/prospect deal if anything happens.

Martin Erat, LW, Washington Capitals: This is getting to be something of a habit for Erat. After asking to get out of Nashville a couple of seasons ago, he now reportedly wants out of DC and has asked for a trade. With 11 years on his tires, his wish is to go to a Stanley Cup contender so he can have a shot at a championship before his career is finished.
No word yet on any specific destinations for Erat, but we’re sure this isn’t the last time we’ve heard his name this week. He could very easily go to a depth-hungry team that could use an experienced veteran.

Viktor Fasth, G, Anaheim Ducks: Here’s another intriguing scenario that could develop in Anaheim during the coming days. Fasth is currently on an AHL rehab assignment, but is apparently back to 100 percent after missing much of the season with injury issues. That leaves the Ducks with three capable net-minders, and Fasth is probably the most likely to get moved.
There’s no way Jonas Hiller is getting traded, and the team probably wouldn’t send Frederik Andersen back down, so Fasth is the odd man out. He’s a guy to keep an eye on this week.

Islanders Potential Moves: We could see the Isles as sellers in the days leading up to next week’s deadline, as the signs seem to be pointing to a potential off-load.
Two of the names being talked about as pieces to move are Thomas Vanek and Andrew MacDonald. Both reportedly turned down expensive multi-year contracts recently. Vanek and MacDonald are headed for free agency, so it makes sense for the Islanders to try and sell them off as rental property to a contending team.
Given the situation, it seems very likely that one or both of these players will be gone by the deadline.

Sharks Won’t Be Players: If you’re a Sharks fan, don’t expect any significant moves from your team before next week’s cut-off date. Team GM Doug Wilson made some comments recently that indicate he doesn’t want to risk upsetting the team’s chemistry by making a significant move. He also seemed very protective of his young assets and didn’t sound likely to give up much of anything.
That said, the team will be around $1 million over the cap with a healthy Raffi Torres and Logan Couture in the lineup, so we could be seeing some minor salary-pruning moves.
