The Line: San Jose Sharks -221 / Carolina Hurricanes +200 --- Over/Under: 5.5 See the Latest Odds

The Hurricanes look to end their ugly losing skid as they finish off their California road trip in San Jose on Tuesday night.

The Hurricanes have gone from a disappointing team on the brink of sneaking into the playoffs to a disaster in a tailspin over their last 10 contests and their road trip to California hasn’t made things any better. Carolina has dropped five games in a row and eight of their last 10 overall dating back to before the Olympic break and now sit in 13th place in the Eastern Conference and seven points out of a playoff spot. The Canes have struggled over the last two seasons to meet the expectations placed on them after they acquired Jordan Staal from the Penguins and with youngster Jeff Skinner cooling off a bit from his rookie season and Alex Semin being inconsistent things haven’t been pretty in Raleigh. Carolina is likely to be active at the trade deadline as Jim Rutherford is one of the best executives in the league and he won’t let his team crumble to pieces and if he feels this season is a lost cause don’t be surprised to see some fireworks coming out of the Hurricanes camp this week.

San Jose Sharks vs. Carolina Hurricanes - 3/4/14

Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

The Sharks have been as steady as ever in the Western Conference and are locked into the second spot in the Pacific division at the moment with a possibility albeit slim of catching the Ducks for the divisional crown. The Sharks sit with 84 points through 62 games and are seven back of Anaheim but there is still plenty of time left in the regular season and with the way the Sharks can rip off winning streaks the Ducks can’t be popping champagne just yet. San Jose is a just a very solid team that is loaded with veteran talent and guys who know what it takes to win but also have an emerging star in Logan Couture who will be the future of this team when guys like Joe Thornton, and Patrick Marleau move along. I think the Sharks will be in the market to bring in another top six forward that would make their scoring unit even better and with this being one of the final kicks at the can for San Jose I wouldn’t be surprised to see management go all in. While the law of averages would dictate a Carolina win to snap their ugly losing skid I can’t buy what they’re selling at the moment as it looks as though they’ve lost some confidence and against a great team on the road that isn’t a good recipe.
