The Canadiens will look to ride the momentum of Wednesday’s effort in Anaheim to another victory in Phoenix against the Coyotes.
Montreal went into Anaheim last night coming off a tough loss against the LA Kings but instead of getting derailed they responded nicely with a strong outing against the Ducks which at the time of writing Montreal is leading by a 2-0 mark. The Canadiens weren’t as active as some people thought they might be during yesterday’s trade deadline festivities but they landed perhaps the most coveted of the rental players in the form of high scoring winger Thomas Vanek. The Canadiens definitely needed another offensive weapon and they certainly get that in the form of the former Sabres and Islanders netminder who represented Austria in the Sochi Olympics. Montreal has done well as it is this season and now have a great chance at locking down a top six playoff spot and possibly challenge for a home ice advantage seed by landing in the top four spots in the East.

The Coyotes head into tonight’s game coming off a victory and sit in 4th place in the Pacific division but are certainly right in the thick of things in the Western Conference playoff picture and with a win tonight they can distance themselves from the rest of the pack. Phoenix is a tough team to figure out as they haven’t had the most talented teams in recent years yet they always seem to find themselves in the postseason and being a huge thorn in the side of some of the game’s powers. The Coyotes had pretty high expectations coming into this season as a result of their stingy play and while they haven’t necessarily lived up to that billing on a consistent basis they definitely have a chance at qualifying for the second season once again. While the line here is going to move depending on the result of Montreal’s game with Anaheim but either way I think this is a great spot for Phoenix as they are playing at home and catch a Canadiens team in a back to back a night after playing the league’s best team.
