Ben Scrivens welcomes some familiar faces to town on Sunday as his Oilers host his former team from Los Angeles at Rexall Place.

The Kings head into action on Sunday as the hottest team in the league as they’re finally living up to the expectation of a Stanley Cup contender as they have ripped off six straight victories. Despite their winning ways the Kings have to compete with the Ducks and Sharks in the Pacific division and with the way those two have played this year is it unrealistic to think they can move past either of them into a more favourable playoff position. Los Angeles would love to move up into a home ice spot by regular season’s end but it might prove difficult as the Western Conference is ridiculously competitive and the majority of the Cup contenders reside in the West. Los Angeles acquired Ben Scrivens in the offseason for Jonathan Bernier but was shipped to Edmonton a month ago and has since signed a two year extension to stay in town. He will get a chance at redemption on Sunday as Edmonton will look to play spoiler down the stretch.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Los Angeles Kings - 3/9/14

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

Edmonton has had another disappointing campaign and the fans are starting to get restless as this would mark another year without making the playoffs and another top end draft pick. The Oilers unloaded some contracts and cap space and acquired some extra draft picks at the trade deadline last week and while nothing tangible came back in return other than Viktor Fasth from the Ducks the Oil have to be happy with the direction things are taking especially when they get a vote of confidence from Wayne Gretzky. The Oilers are in tough here as home underdogs but I like the matchup here for Scrivens who will start to settle in to his full time starter’s role for the first time in his career and what better team to do it against than one who gave up on him. While I am not confident enough to suggest taking the Oilers on the money line I do think we see a tight game and if Edmonton is to have a shot at winning they’ll have to keep the Kings off the scoreboard.
