The Los Angeles Kings play host to the Florida Panthers in Saturday night action at the Staples Center.
With their sights set on the second Wild Card, Phoenix made an early lead hold up as they downed visiting Florida 2-1 on Thursday night. First period tallies off the sticks of Antoine Vermette and Radim Vrbata was enough for Mike Smith who picked up the win with a 22 stop performance to lead the Coyotes to their seventh win in nine contests and extended their lead for the final postseason berth to four points over Dallas who fell to Philadelphia. Scott Gomez gave Florida some hope with his third period goal with just over four minute remaining but Phoenix stood tall. Roberto Luongo recorded 20 save in absorbing the loss.

Los Angeles edged visiting Washington 2-1 in a shootout Thursday night to put an end to a three skid. The once red hot Kings opened the scoring in the first period when Anze Kopitar slapper from the left circle found the back of the net at 14:09. Joel Ward scored the equalizer at 12:24 of the final frame for his 22nd but nether team could light the lamp for the remainder of regulation. Marian Gaborik won it in the third round of the shootout with Jonathan Quick securing the win when he stoned Nicklas Backstrom on the Capitals final attempt. Quick recorded 21 saves in the victory with Jaroslav Halak posted 27 stops.
The Panthers are 0-4 in the past four trips to Los Angeles while the under has gone 4-0 in those meetings and is 4-0 in the last four overall. I expect a big spread and I am not liking that because the Kings can have trouble scoring. I'll look deeper when goalies are announced...
