The Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs take the ice at the BB&T Center on Thursday.
Toronto had an opportunity to keep the door open for their postseason hopes but Tampa Bay slammed it shut with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday. The Maple Leafs season ended the second Columbus knocked off Phoenix in overtime Tuesday but the real death blow was the Leafs 2-10 run that dropped them all the way from second in the Atlantic Division to watching the playoffs on TV. Ondrej Palat lit the lamp twice with Victor Hedman scoring an empty netter to power the Lightning attack while Anders Linback came in for an injured Ben Bishop to record 25 saves in the win. Bishop injured his wrist in the opening frame after posting six stops.

Philadelphia secured a spot in the postseason with a 5-2 rout at Florida on Tuesday night after missing the playoffs a year ago. The Flyers exploded for four goals in the second after a scoreless first and Florida's late comeback fell short of the mark. Claude Giroux led the visitors with two markers with Tye McGinn, Vincent LeCavalier and Sean Couturier also scoring. Steve Mason brushed aside 38 shots to give Philly consecutive wins. The Panthers received goals from Erik Gudbranson and Jonathan Huberdeau in the third to cut the deficit to 4-2 but the rally was shortlived with Dan Ellis giving up all five scores on 27 shots.
The Maple Leafs are 2-6 in their last eight trips to Florida with the under going 6-2 in those meetings and 5-1 in the past six overall. I don't know what the goalie situation will be like with both teams out of the postseason but I'll take a stab at this when I find out...
