The Bruins look to wrap up their opening round series with the Red Wings as game five goes Saturday at the TD Garden.
The Red Wings shocked the hockey world with a series opening victory on the road in Boston, easily one of the toughest places to play, and had many Bruins’ skeptics looking very smart. However, that is all the Red Wings and their fans can hang their hats on at the moment as it has been all Boston since despite game four going to overtime but even in that contest the B’s were the better team. The Wings were hoping a return of captain Henrik Zetterberg would be the spark they needed to get back in this series as the emotional return of such a strong player and the electricity at Joe Louis Arena looked like a great opportunity for the Wings to draw even. While Detroit came very close and forced overtime I think they lost their chance at making this series competitive as it is very tough to win in Boston and if they couldn’t find a way to win in the context outlined above then I don’t think they can do it on the road without any of that added energy. Jonas Gustavsson, who actually played quite well on Thursday, is scheduled to get the start once again as he goes up against Tuukka Rask.

The Bruins were projected by many to win the Eastern Conference not only at the beginning of the playoffs but at the beginning of the season as well which isn’t a bold prediction by any means but just goes to show how much respect this team has. Boston suffered a heartbreaking collapse in game six of the Cup finals last season and since the puck dropped in October they have been a team on a mission and while many outsiders see this team as being dirty and whiny they get the job done and are one of the most complete teams in the league. Tuukka Rask was named as a nominee for the Vezina Trophy and while he probably doesn’t need any extra motivation to perform in the postseason I think he can use this playoff run as a platform to secure the award for himself and his teammates. While I really liked the Red Wings to even the series up in a perfect storm type scenario on Thursday night I never really saw them as a threat in this series and I think the B’s put them out of their misery here and skate away with another comfortable victory.
