NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Blackhawks, Ovechkin, Tonight's TV Schedule and More
May 19, 2014
Now that we’ve gotten a taste of both the East and West finals in these 2014 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, we can only expect the quality of play to excel from here. Before we get ready for tonight’s game, let’s take our daily look around the league and check out what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Corey Crawford, G, Chicago Blackhawks: The 2014 Western Conference Final is off and running, and it looks exactly like the 2013 Western Conference Final. It was pretty tight for most of the game, but Chicago was able to pull away and secure a 3-1 victory in Game 1.
Crawford was big here, logging 25 saves on 26 shots. He was helped along by Brandon Saad, who notched a goal and an assist in 15:36 on the ice. Chicago is now 7-0 at home this postseason.
Game 2 will be in the Windy City once again on Wednesday night.

R.J. Umberger, LW, Columbus Blue Jackets: It appears we’ve got our first disgruntled NHL player asking for a trade this off-season. Umberger has reportedly requested a move, but the sentiment doesn’t seem to simply be sour grapes.
He dealt with a myriad of injuries in 2013 which affected his production greatly, and as the season wore on he was benched in favor of a youth movement. If Umberger could get a fresh start in another city, it would probably prove beneficial to both him and the team. Look for a trade in the very near future.
Alex Ovechkin, RW, Washington Capitals: Uh-oh. This Capitals off-season just keeps getting worse. Ovechkin suffered what looked like a left knee injury during his game in the IIHF World Championships, where he’s playing for Russia. He took a tough hit and was writhing on the ice in pain before being helped off.
The good news is that he was able to walk back at the hotel (though he was limping), and the prognosis seems to be better than the initial fears. There’s not much info out there regarding specifics, but we’ll keep you posted when we get an update. Ovechkin is expected to miss out on the next game tomorrow and could possibly miss more time if his injury is bad.
NHL Daily Schedule: The Eastern Conference will be getting back to business tonight, with the Canadiens trying to even the series at home. Here’s a look at the schedule, along with the start time and TV networks you can find the game on.
