NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Rangers, Bruins, Weekend TV Schedule and More
May 24, 2014
After an off-night last night, the 2013 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs will be kicking back up again tonight. In the meantime, we’ve got lots to go over before that puck drops again, so here’s our daily look at the notable happenings around the league.
Derek Stepan, C, New York Rangers: The Rangers received some pretty ugly injury news yesterday concerning Stepan. He sustained a broken jaw after a late hit (and a consequent no-call) from Brandon Prust during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Thursday. He underwent corrective surgery yesterday.
We’ll probably get some official news on Stepan’s status this weekend (the fear is he’s done for the playoffs--but we’ll have to see). In the meantime, the Rangers have a lot to think about concerning their blown opportunities in Game 3 that have shifted the series toward Montreal’s favor. Losing Stepan would be a big blow, as he’s tied for second during the Rangers’ playoff run with 11 points in 17 appearances.

Daniel Carcillo, LW, New York Rangers: As if that weren’t enough, The Rangers’ Stanley Cup hopes were dealt another blow yesterday when Carcillo was suspended for 10 games for physical abuse of an official.
Under the league’s rules, a player can’t apply physical force to an official in any manner, and a 10-game ban is the minimum for such an offense. The incident in question occurred in the first period of Game 3 when Carcillo was being escorted to the penalty box.
He’s effectively done for the rest of the year. The earliest he could come back would be a Stanley Cup Finals Game 7.
Bruins Injury Notes: We’ve got a couple of tidbits this morning concerning Bruins players. We’ll start with Chris Kelly, who underwent back surgery (herniated disc) yesterday. By all indications, the procedure went smoothly. He’s expected to rest up a bit before starting into his rehab, but should be fine for camp.
Milan Lucic also underwent surgery yesterday, but his was on his right wrist. He hurt it during Game 7 against the Canadiens.
Like Kelly, Lucic is expected to be just fine by the time camp gets here.
