NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on League News, NHL Finals Schedule and More
June 4, 2014
Today’s the day. After a long season of waiting, the NHL Stanley Cup Finals will finally be getting started this evening. While we’re getting settled in and reserving our spots on the couch, let’s take our daily look around the league at some of the noteworthy players and storylines out there right now.
Daniel Carcillo, LW, New York Rangers: Yesterday, the Rangers got some great news. After appealing his 10-game suspension, Carcillo got his sentence reduced to six games, which means we’ll be seeing him in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. He’s eligible to return in Game 4, offering some extra depth to a New York team that could sure use it.
Carcillo was suspended after Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals for making contact with an official on his way to the penalty box. That offense carries an automatic 10-game suspension.

Dale Weise, RW, Montreal Canadiens: Earlier this week, we got some news on Weise’s condition, and it’s as most people expected. He was diagnosed as suffering a concussion during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, which is somewhat odd because he was given clearance to return to the game.
Weise sat out Game 6, but with Montreal now at home he can focus on recovering. Unlike some players, he doesn’t have a long history with concussions, so he should be able to recover just fine. Weise will be a free agent this off-season.
Pens GM Latest: Yesterday, we got a bit of insight into the Penguins’ search for a new general manager. Pierre McGuire, who currently serves as a hockey analyst for NBC Sports, confirmed that he’s in the running to land the job, and that he’s had conversations with management already.
Pittsburgh is looking for a new GM after letting Ray Shero go last month, and McGuire would make sense as a replacement. He’s been with the team as a scout and an assistant coach.
There are at least four other names in the potential talent pool here, including Julien BriseBois, Paul Fenton, Jim Rutherford and Tom Fitzgerald.
