NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 29, 2014
It’s been a pretty quiet week so far in the NHL, which is pretty easily understandable during the off-season. Still, there were several notable happenings occurring out there yesterday, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look at what’s going on across the league and see who’s in the headlines.
Tatar Deal: The Red Wings were active yesterday, inking LW Tomas Tatar to a three-year deal. Over 73 games last year, he posted 19 scores and 20 assists in a head-turning campaign. Tatar will be looking to take another step forward in 2014-15, and if he can he’ll become one of the elite players on the Wings’ roster.

Winnik Deal: The Maple Leafs were active yesterday as well, inking LW Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal worth $1.3 million. Winnik played in 76 games for Anaheim during 2013-14, posting 24 assists and a half-dozen goals. That points total was a career high for him. If he can show some early promise in camp, he’ll likely earn a spot on the third line in Toronto.
Tyrell Deal: The Blue Jackets inked C Dana Tyrell to a one-year, two-way deal yesterday. He was mostly an AHLer last season, posting 15 scores and 18 helpers in 63 games. He did get to the NHL for seven games with the Lightning, however, and will look to work his way back up with Columbus.
Ellerby Deal: The Jets re-signed defenseman Keaton Ellerby to a one-year, two-way deal yesterday, which is a bit odd since the team failed to extend him a qualifying offer after the season. Still, it’s a nice depth move for the Jets. Ellerby has been through some difficult times in his personal life recently, so it’ll be good to see him out on the ice again.
Capitals Exits: Three former Capitals signed overseas contracts yesterday. First there’s RW Matt Watkins, who inked with an Austrian team (oddly enough also named the Capitals) on a one-year deal.
RW Brandon Segal signed with Medvescak Zagreb from the KHL. He was picked up in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, but has played in only 103 games at the NHL level since then.
Nicolas Deschamps inked a one-year deal as well with a Finnish team. He played in 65 games with AHL Hershey last year, posting 25 helpers in that span.
