NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 21, 2014
All things considered, it’s been a pretty busy week in the NHL so far, especially for the off-season. We’ve got another round of updates in store for you today, so with that said let’s take our daily look around the league at some of the notable names out there. Here’s the latest.
Harding Status: Let’s take a moment to check in on the health of Wild goalie Josh Harding, as there have been some new reports on him this week.
The good news is that he’s all set for training camp, according to sources close to the team, and should be able to pass the medical examinations required for participation.
Harding has been dealing with multiple sclerosis over the past couple of seasons, and his most recent bout came toward the end of December last year. Prior to that, he had an 18-7-3 record with a nice 1.65 GAA and .933 save percentage.
Regardless, there are tons of question marks surrounding the Wild’s goalie situation. With Backstrom and Kuemper still on the roster, we may see a move before the season.

Mottau Retirement: We haven’t had a chance to cover this one just yet, so let’s take a look at defenseman Mike Mottau’s situation.
He announced his retirement a couple of days ago after mulling a return to the game at the AHL level. Mottau ultimately declined to come back, and finishes his career with 321 NHL games in a journeyman capacity with the Rangers, Devils, Flames, Bruins, Panthers and Islanders.
Red Wings Health Update: We’ve got a few health updates on some Red Wings players, so let’s head to the Motor City and check those guys out.
C Pavel Datsyuk is supposedly feeling well after having some knee issues. The general consensus is that he’ll be ready to go for training camp. He hasn’t been out on the ice since April, however, and there are some endurance concerns here.
C Stephen Weiss had a hernia surgery in late April, and is feeling good again, according to sources close to the team. He posted just four points in his first season in Detroit, vastly underperforming his five-year, $24.5 million deal. Weiss has a lot of work to do to get back in fans’ good graces.
Then there’s LW Henrik Zetterberg. He’s had some issues with his foot, but reportedly is nearly back to form. The feeling around Detroit is that he’ll be back in training camp.
Both Zetterberg and Datsyuk missed 37 games last year, and if both are healthy during this upcoming campaign, it will take a lot of pressure off the younger players and should lead to more stability down the line.
