NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 28, 2014
Now that we’ve crested the proverbial hill of the workweek, it’s time to start looking forward to the weekend. Over the next few days we should see the NHL news continuing to trickle in, and soon the action will ramp up in preparation for the 2014-15 campaign. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and see who’s making news out there.
Expansion coming?: Here’s a potentially enormous storyline that should get everyone’s heart rates going. This week, sources claimed that the NHL will be adding four new expansion teams by the 2017 season (which, coincidentally, will be the league’s 100th anniversary). The reported new sites will be Las Vegas (which has already been characterized as a “done deal”), Seattle, another team in Toronto and a team in Quebec.
Now, officially the league has been tight-lipped about this, so there’s no way to confirm exactly how far along everything is. There obviously would be considerable hurdles to overcome in order to expand the NHL by four new teams--ownership approval, securing stadium rights/construction, etc.--but it’s an enticing idea. We’ll keep you posted on all the rumors flying around.

Manning Deal: The Flyers have been pretty busy this week with depth signings, as they posted another one yesterday. Defenseman Brandon Manning inked with the club on a one-year, two-way deal yesterday.
Despite his promise on the offensive end, Manning will probably end up starting the season at the AHL level. If he shows his stuff--or if the club gets unlucky with injuries--we could see him getting a call-up.
Bouma Deal: The Flames also were active yesterday, snagging left winger Lance Bouma to a one-year contract.
Bouma played a full season in the league during 2013-14, posting five scores and 10 helpers in his 78 appearances. Most sources close to the team think he’ll mature into a competent scorer, but not a world-beater by any means.
NHL Daily Schedule: The league action will be picking back up again on Wednesday, October 8. Let’s check out the schedule for that evening and see what we can expect on opening night.
