It may be difficult to believe, but training camps around the NHL are just a couple of weeks away. After that, it’s not too much longer until the official start of the 2014-15 season. On that encouraging note, let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players are making headlines out there right now.

Ducks Outlook: Let’s start things out today by heading over to Anaheim and checking out the status of the Ducks, whose postseason dreams were dashed in a disappointing Stanley Cup Playoffs last season.
After posting 116 points during the regular season, Anaheim looked primed to do some major damage in the playoffs. They were stopped in their tracks, however, by the eventual champion Kings, done in by bad power play and no depth up the middle.
The Ducks have been nursing their wounds in the off-season, getting right to work adding depth with the Ryan Kesler trade. Kesler will pair up with Ryan Getzlaf to form a potent combination at center for Anaheim. Nate Thompson should make a capable third-liner.
It will be interesting to see what the Ducks do at the goalie position as well. Frederik Anderson and John Gibson look to be battling things out for the No. 1 position, with veteran Jason LaBarbera hanging around for depth and experience. Defense was one of the big holes for the Ducks in the playoffs, so we’ll see if they can get things shored up for another run at their archrivals.

Brookbank Outlook: This past weekend, we got an update on defenseman Sheldon Brookbank and his potential future in the NHL. He’ll be attending training camp with the Flames in the coming weeks, giving him an opportunity to try out with the team.
Brookbank is currently an unrestricted free agent, and though he wished to play for the Blackhawks this year (he’s been there for the past two seasons), Chicago simply can’t afford him as they’re $2.2 million over the cap.
Brookbank posted two scores and five helpers during his 48 games with the Blackhawks during 2013-14.
