NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Off-Season Schedule and More
September 1, 2014
We’ve reached the Labor Day holiday in the NHL off-season, which means there aren’t too many days left until training camps start. The news is trickling in slowly from around the league, but there’s plenty to occupy our time as we cruise toward the opener. That said, let’s take our daily look at the headlines out there.
Around the League: Let’s spend this holiday installment by checking around the NHL at some of the notable news items over the past couple of days.

Center Scott Gomez will be attending training camp with the Devils this month in order to try out for the team. He’s coming off a 12-point stint in Florida (46 games). He’s got some pretty steep odds against him, but could end up making it as a depth add.
Philadelphia’s Sean Couturier will reportedly be healthy enough to participate in training camp. He’s been on skates since July and his injured ankle apparently feels strong.
Elsewhere in Philly, Nicklas Grossman will also be ready for camp. He’s also coming off an ankle injury that required surgery to repair tendons. That whole process was pegged with a 6-8 week recovery frame at the time. Grossman posted 14 points in 78 games last year.
Now on to some unfortunate news for the Flyers. Defenseman Kimmo Timonen is back stateside, but the general feeling around the club is that he won’t be able to hit the ice this season. He’s been dealing with blood clots, and there’s a distinct possibility that he won’t be cleared for contact any time soon.
Good news surrounding the Hurricanes’ Eric Staal. He’s coming off abdominal surgery in July and has been skating for almost two weeks. Staal has been working hard this off-season on his physicality and conditioning, so look for him to make a renewed effort at being the offensive force he once was.
NHL Daily Schedule: The league action will be picking back up again on Wednesday, October 8. Let’s check out the schedule for that evening and see what we can expect on opening night.
